Al-Fatiha is the opening chapter of the Quran and is recited in Muslim prayer. This page uses the verse-numbering convention in the Al Quran Cloud quran-uthmani edition, where the Basmala is verse 1 and the final verse is 1:7.

1:1

بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ

Bismillāhir-Raḥmānir-Raḥīm

In the name of Allah, the Most Compassionate, the Most Merciful.

1:2

ٱلْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ رَبِّ ٱلْعَٰلَمِينَ

Al-ḥamdu lillāhi Rabbil-ʿālamīn

All praise belongs to Allah, Lord of all worlds.

1:3

ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ

Ar-Raḥmānir-Raḥīm

The Most Compassionate, the Most Merciful.

1:4

مَٰلِكِ يَوْمِ ٱلدِّينِ

Māliki yawmid-dīn

Master of the Day of Judgment.

1:5

إِيَّاكَ نَعْبُدُ وَإِيَّاكَ نَسْتَعِينُ

Iyyāka naʿbudu wa iyyāka nastaʿīn

You alone we worship, and You alone we ask for help.

1:6

ٱهْدِنَا ٱلصِّرَٰطَ ٱلْمُسْتَقِيمَ

Ihdinaṣ-ṣirāṭal-mustaqīm

Guide us to the straight path.

1:7

صِرَٰطَ ٱلَّذِينَ أَنْعَمْتَ عَلَيْهِمْ غَيْرِ ٱلْمَغْضُوبِ عَلَيْهِمْ وَلَا ٱلضَّآلِّينَ

Ṣirāṭal-ladhīna anʿamta ʿalayhim ghayril-maghḍūbi ʿalayhim wa laḍ-ḍāllīn

The path of those You have favored, not those who earned anger, nor those who went astray.

Themes in Al-Fatiha

Praise and mercy

The chapter opens with praise of Allah and repeats the attributes of compassion and mercy.

Worship and reliance

The central verse joins worship of Allah with asking Him for help.

Guidance

The closing verses are a prayer for guidance to the straight path.
