How Prayer Time Apps Calculate Salah Times

Prayer times come from astronomy plus a chosen calculation convention. Understanding both is the key to explaining why apps differ—and making yours match the mosque you follow.

A phone does not “detect” Fajr, Dhuhr or Isha directly. It calculates the sun’s position for a date and place, then applies rules selected by a religious organization, region or community. Small differences in those rules can produce different—and internally consistent—timetables.

The information a prayer-time calculation needs

Place and date

Latitude, longitude, date and timezone determine the sun’s position. A stale saved location or wrong timezone can shift the result.

Calculation method

The selected convention defines how Fajr and Isha are calculated, often with solar angles or a fixed interval after Maghrib.

Asr convention

Asr can differ depending on the juristic shadow-length setting. Choose the madhhab or setting your community follows.

Local adjustments

High-latitude rules, rounding, elevation and mosque-specific offsets can all modify the base astronomical result.

Why two prayer apps show different times

Fajr and Isha angles vary

Fajr begins before sunrise and Isha begins after twilight. Calculation organizations use different solar-angle conventions to model those transitions. Some regions use a fixed number of minutes after Maghrib for Isha during part or all of the year. The effect is most visible at Fajr and Isha, while Dhuhr and sunset-based times often remain closer.

Asr may follow a different shadow rule

Apps commonly expose a standard or Hanafi Asr option, sometimes through a broader madhhab setting. If two apps agree on every prayer except Asr, this is one of the first settings to compare.

High latitudes need an additional rule

At northern or southern latitudes, twilight can persist for much of the night or disappear seasonally. Apps may use middle-of-the-night, one-seventh or angle-based adjustments. No app can resolve a community’s preferred religious convention from GPS alone, so local guidance matters.

Location, timezone and rounding can be stale

A city-centre coordinate can differ from your actual position, and travel can leave an app with an old location if background access is disabled. Daylight-saving changes, timezone database updates, elevation corrections and minute rounding can create smaller differences. First confirm the displayed city and timezone before changing offsets.

Your mosque may publish an adjusted timetable

Mosques often standardize congregational schedules, apply safety margins or use a timetable maintained by a regional authority. That schedule may intentionally differ from a raw calculation. If your purpose is to follow that mosque, matching its published method and offsets is more useful than chasing agreement between apps.

How to make an app match your local mosque

  1. Confirm the location and timezone. Check the city shown in the app after travel and after daylight-saving changes.
  2. Ask which calculation method the mosque uses. Many mosque websites or printed timetables name the organization or regional convention.
  3. Set the Asr convention. Choose the madhhab or shadow-length option followed by your community.
  4. Compare several days, not one. A consistent difference points to a setting; a changing difference may point to a different angle or high-latitude rule.
  5. Apply manual offsets only last. Small per-prayer adjustments are useful for a local timetable, but they can hide a wrong method or location if applied too early.
  6. Recheck after travel. Confirm the app refreshed its location and rescheduled notifications for the new timezone.

Sound duration and background behavior are subject to iOS and Android notification limits; a notification setting cannot override a phone that has muted or restricted the app.

Important distinction: sunrise appears on many prayer timetables as a useful boundary, but it is not one of the five obligatory daily prayers. Also distinguish the calculated prayer time from a mosque’s later iqamah time.
